Hi there. Hamelin is Canada's great virtuoso and I've heard him play many pieces, some of which no one else wants to even try to tackle, like Busoni and Godowsky. He is phenomenally gifted and I could quite imagine him giving Dukas the respectful exposition he deserves. The music is quite unattractive on the tonal level but you're right, it might have structural stuff going on that is quite interesting to follow and admire. I am not a huge fan of atonal music and this stuff goes quite a bit into that territory. Reminds me of the unlistenable organ stuff of Messian...which I would consider making captured Al Qaeda operatives to listen to 24 hours a day....would surely drive them into insanity or coughing up names.....

regards,

Fred Houpt

Subject: [f_minor] Re : Dukas

Dear Fred,

I discovered the Dukas sonata in the international piano festival in La Roque d'Anthéron (outdoor performances in the south of France), played by Marc-André Hammelin, a Canadian pianst who loves exploring untrodden paths from Sorabji to Godowsky or Kapustine. I was really seduced by it but I would not play it as it exceeds my technical skills by far. I notably love the 3rd toccata-like movement. Apart from Hammelin, another good recording exists by François-René Duchâble, available on Youtube.

I believe it is a very interesting work, rich of many ideas and well-structured, even though it sounds very "chromatic" as you say. After all, it was composed in 1901 so nothing suprising about it! The structure reminds me of Beethoven but the harmony rather of Franck and Wagner.

I said I'd be glad to hear a Gould performance of it because it would be one of these rather obscure works he could have defended with panache like the Bizet or the Strauss pieces.

Someone mentioned Paul Dukas's music last week. So, I downloaded some piano solo works and frankly, they are the most hideously chromatic and unattractive pieces I've run into in a long time. I also downloaded a piano reduction of the famous Sorcerer's Apprentice, which is quite delightful.

Anyone tried to play any of the Dukas sonatas and such?

Regards,

Fred Houpt
