Kurosawa showed Jon Voight a screenplay for which he'd been unable to
secure production financing. The horrified Voight bought
it, translated it to an American wilderness setting, and starred
in it, with Eric Roberts and Rebecca De Mornay. Voight and Roberts
were nominated for Oscars; De Mornay's performance matches theirs, she
ain't just along for the ride; and as the villain, John P. Ryan is a
standout in the great Hollywood tradition of "The Man You Love to Hate" (the
slogan pioneered in the Silent era by the monocled, sneering cad Erich
von Stroheim).</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=4 face="Palatino Linotype">More than this I ain't saying.
Microwave some popcorn and watch it. It's difficult and unpleasant --
it sure isn't the Feel-Good Hit of the Season -- but
there's startling</FONT><FONT size=4 face="Palatino Linotype"> dialogue
the equal of Shakespeare, and the thrills and terror (amidst
spectacular winter wilderness) never let up. If you thought you'd seen The
Kurosawa Collection, but you haven't seen RT, you've missed a
masterpiece.</FONT></DIV><FONT size=4 face="Palatino Linotype">
