so many of you remembered the 25th. Indeed a charmed birthday, and I would say Glenn was a good Libra boy. (They are such artistic types!) Well I had it marked on my calendar too and since it was a
not bad day, though threatening rain a little, I made the trek to the cemetery where birds were singing and leaves were gently blowing in the wind. I took some flowers, and was glad to see some already there. Harris wrote 3 novels about this Lecter bloke and GG has brief cameos in all of them being Lecter's favourite pianist. You haven't missed much if you haven't read them or seen the movies, the shock effect tends to wear off with time. There are definetly better page-turners out there.<br><br>If you mean the other documentaries by Bruno (Montsagenon) then I must warn you about Hereafter. This "documentary" is basically romantic Hero Worshipping kitsch. I must admit that it has some moments (list member myazawa-san gets to deliver a letter to a GG fan in Japan) and you will get to see a few previously unreleased clips. But this is not GG, this is how Monsieur Montsagenone thinks GG was or at least how he sees GG must be seen. In the movie he goes on at lennght on what a joy and privilege it was to work with GG, yadda yadda yadda. I found that pompous, the director of a documentary has nothing to do whatsoever in front of the camera. The scene with
that girl getting a GB tatoo is pointless and doesn't illustrate anything and that other scene with the woman claiming that GG's music saved her life is just kitsch. Montsagenon sees GG as some kind of 19th century tragic hero like Byron, Shelley or Rimbaud and we all know that GG was quite the contrary. But do go ahead!<br> and watch it, make up your own midn, this is just my opinion.<br><br>Hold your breath for Genius Within. Based on the clips I have seen on youtube (before they were taken down), this is an interesting documentary, fun to watch and with a few surprises in store (i.e. The Foss Incident). Let's hope for a 2 DVD set (the long TV version please) plus extras and extended interviews after the cinema run. Hi everyone, <br><br><br> Thanks for cluing me in on the SOTL, Hannibal etc. movies being based on novels. "Duuhh!" from me. Here I was being steamed at J. Demme and/or screenwriters bringing dear GG's name into the script (in one or both of the films? I'm not sure and don't care to know at this point). Not being a reader of that genre (and only seeing bits of the films) I hadn't been aware of the origin of the story lines. However I guess the author (Harris? sorry I did look it up but have forgotten his complete name already) is quite highly esteemed apparently so I say "a chaque un son gout" and hope that is spelled correctly. I am fond of old Vincent Price movies but my appreciation for horror stops there pretty much.<br><br><br> As for someone playing GG in a future film I
hope it doesn't happen, though sometimes I think David Duchovny looks a tad like Glenn (but he's been in so many sex-themed shows let's not encourage it). The "Thiry-two" film is lovely but it still isn't Gould. I vote for cherishing his memory in the documentaries. I have a reissue of "On and Off the Record" by the NFB which probably many of you have too which has marvellous scenes of GG playing, walking about that old NY studio hiking up his pants, shirttail hanging out, sqeaking his chair to test how noisy it really gets (though I think they added some extra loud fake squeaks in the editing process), chatting with Howard Scott the producer and Don Hunstein the photographer etc. And he's so brilliant, handsome, riveting, funny. He's also in "The Golden Age of the Piano", briefly; and I have "Hereafter" and "The Alchemist" by Bruno Monsaingeon whose love and respect for Glenn shines through in his films. I was able to check the end credits of SotL and these clearly state that it is NOT GG but Jerry Zimmerman performing. So we busted another myth (if there ever was one)....<br><br> I also just had a troll idea for a GG-themed movie. What about his last performance in L.A., seen from different perspectives by GG himself, the stage manager, a concert goer etc. Directed by the Cohen Brothers with a good buget and A-List actors. Probably won't be a howler at the box office, but could get critical acclaim. Glenn Gould's 78th birthday.<br><br>"Guess what happened to me today?"<br><br>Saturday evening September 25th "La Nuit des Musees", I attended a concert of chamber music played on instruments from the 19th century and a Paul McNulty fortepiano. After the concert I walked to my bus stop and found a man waiting there with a tuba case in tow. We spoke, as one will do, and to my utter astonishment it turned out that he is from Winnipeg and plays with The Salvation Army Band. Well you could have knocked me over with a feather. Far far away from Canada there he stood waiting for a bus - an unwitting recipient of Gould's posthumous largesse (I assume he receives some sort of salary). Of course I spoke to him of the Glenn Gould 50/50 "unfortunate people and unfortunate animals" last will and testament about which he knew nothing at all. Strange that. <br><br>I listened to Haydn played on a fortepiano earlier this evening in a small room with parquet floor and
wooden ceiling (an unfortunate honey bee happened to be trapped inside with us, flying from chandelier to chandelier) and the gorgeous perfume of wood wax-oil in my nostrils. I'm listening to Gould's Haydn The Six Last Sonatas now and there's no question that Haydn would have played this double lp over and over again and would have wanted more. We spoke, as one will do, and to my <br>utter astonishment it turned out that he is from Winnipeg and plays with <br>The Salvation Army Band. Well you could have knocked me over with a feather. <br>Far far away from Canada there he stood waiting for a bus - an unwitting <br>recipient of Gould's posthumous largesse (I assume he receives some sort of <br>salary). Of course I spoke to him of the Glenn Gould 50/50 "unfortunate <br>people and unfortunate animals" last will and testament about which he knew <br>nothing at all. Strange that. <br><br>I listened to Haydn played on a fortepiano earlier this evening in a small <br>room with parquet floor and wooden ceiling (an
unfortunate honey bee <br>happened to be trapped inside with us, flying from chandelier to chandelier) and <br>the gorgeous perfume of wood wax-oil in my nostrils. I am fond of old Vincent Price movies but my appreciation for <br>horror stops there pretty much.<br><br>As for someone playing GG in a future film I hope it doesn't happen, <br>though sometimes I think David Duchovny looks a tad like Glenn (but he's been in <br>so many sex-themed shows let's not encourage it). The "Thiry-two" film is <br>lovely but it still isn't Gould. I vote for cherishing his memory in the <br>documentaries. I have a reissue of "On and Off the Record" by the NFB which <br>probably many of you have too which has marvellous scenes of GG playing, <br>walking about that old NY studio hiking up his pants,
shirttail hanging out, <br>sqeaking his chair to test how noisy it really gets (though I think they <br>added some extra loud fake squeaks in the editing process), chatting with <br>Howard Scott the producer and Don Hunstein the photographer etc. And he's so <br>brilliant, handsome, riveting, funny. He's also in "The Golden Age of the <br>Piano", briefly; and I have "Hereafter" and "The Alchemist" by Bruno <br>Monsaingeon whose love and respect for Glenn shines through in his films. This "documentary" is basically romantic Hero Worshipping kitsch. I must admit that it has some moments (list member myazawa-san gets to deliver a letter to a GG fan in Japan) and you will get to see a few previously unreleased clips. But this is not GG, this is how Monsieur Montsagenone thinks GG was or at least how he sees GG must be seen. In the movie he goes on at lennght on what a joy and privilege it was to work with GG, yadda yadda yadda. I found that pompous, the director of a documentary has nothing to do whatsoever in front of the camera. The scene with that girl getting a GB tatoo is pointless and doesn't illustrate anything and that other scene with the
woman claiming that GG's music saved her life is just kitsch. Montsagenon sees GG as some kind of 19th century tragic hero like Byron, Shelley or Rimbaud and we all know that GG was quite the contrary. But do go ahe!<br> ad and watch it, make up your own midn, this is just my opinion.<br><br> Hold your breath for Genius Within. Based on the clips I have seen on youtube (before they were taken down), this is an interesting documentary, fun to watch and with a few surprises in store (i.e. The Foss Incident). Hi everyone, <br><br><br> Thanks for cluing me in on the SOTL, Hannibal etc. movies being based on novels. "Duuhh!" from me. Here I was being steamed at J. Demme and/or screenwriters bringing dear GG's name into the script (in one or both of the films? I'm not sure and don't care to know at this point). Not being a reader of that genre (and only seeing bits of the films) I hadn't been aware of the origin of the story lines. However I guess the author (Harris? sorry I did look it up but have forgotten his complete name already) is quite highly esteemed apparently so I say "a chaque un son gout" and hope that is spelled correctly. I am fond of old Vincent Price movies but my appreciation for horror stops there pretty much.<br><br><br> As for someone playing GG in a future film I hope it doesn't happen, though sometimes I think David Duchovny looks a tad like Glenn (but he's been in so
many sex-themed shows let's not encourage it). The "Thiry-two" film is lovely but it still isn't Gould. I vote for cherishing his memory in the documentaries. I have a reissue of "On and Off the Record" by the NFB which probably many of you have too which has marvellous scenes of GG playing, walking about that old NY studio hiking up his pants, shirttail hanging out, sqeaking his chair to test how noisy it really gets (though I think they added some extra loud fake squeaks in the editing process), chatting with Howard Scott the producer and Don Hunstein the photographer etc. And he's so brilliant, handsome, riveting, funny. He's also in "The Golden Age of the Piano", briefly; and I have "Hereafter" and "The Alchemist" by Bruno Monsaingeon whose love and respect for Glenn shines through in his films.
